Global warming: The biggest threat to our coral reefs
A new report out from NOAA and other American agencies reports:
- Corals in the Gulf of Eilat/Aqaba, Israel.
Almost one-fifth of the world’s coral reefs have already been lost to global warming, water pollution, and overfishing.
Without taking immediate measures to stop climate change and reduce the local pressures on reefs, the world is set to lose another 15% of coral reefs over the next 10−20 years and 20% over 20−40 years.
In Israel, the beautiful coral reefs in the Gulf of Eilat (Aqaba) have been threatened for years by pollution. Many of the risks have been minimized, in particular the removal of the last of the fish cages from the Gulf this past summer, but that does not mean we have nothing left to worry about. Global warming is just that – a global threat – and we will be affected by it in Israel just as it will affect the rest of world.
