Stopping the Sludge of the Shafdan
Shafdan, Israel’s largest waste treatment facility (and one of the largest in the world) routinely spills sludge into the Mediterranean. Zalul’s anti-pollution campaign involved thousands of citizens. As a result, alternative sludge-treatment methods are being implemented and the government has instituted legal action against Shafdan’s former management. This campaign set an important precedent in Israel: “the polluters must pay”.
